What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance?

A Medigap policy is private health insurance that helps supplement Original Medicare, Part A (80% Hospital coverage) & Part B (80% Medical coverage).  This means it helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover (like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles).  These are “gaps” in Medicare coverage.  Use our free tool to compare Medicare Supplement insurance plans in your area!

All Medigap policies must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and policies must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.”  Medigap insurance companies can only sell you a “standardized” Medigap policy identified by letters A through N.  Each standardized Medigap policy must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it.  Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter sold by different insurance companies.

The Benefits of Owning a Medicare Supplement Insurance Policy

As you consider your health care coverage choices on Medicare, you want to be sure you understand how each one works, its benefits and your share of the costs.  Here’s a brief look at how Medicare supplement insurance differs from other types of coverage.

Enjoy Low Out-of-Pocket Costs

Enjoy Low Out-of-Pocket Costs

Your Medicare supplement and Medicare Parts A and B work together to minimize your share of health care costs.  Even unexpected medical events aren’t likely to impact your financial health.  Plus, as Medicare deductibles, copayments and coinsurance increase, your Medicare supplement benefits also increase to help meet your eligible expenses.

No Provider Networks, No Referral

No Provider Networks, No Referral

Freedom to keep your doctors and hospitals.  Any health care provider that accepts Medicare patients accepts Medicare supplement insurance.  You won’t worry about finding network providers or getting referrals to see specialists.

Rarely Receive a Bill for Covered Services

Rarely Receive a Bill for Covered Services

When your health care providers accept Medicare, they bill Medicare for the approved services.  Medicare pays their share and your Medicare Supplement plan pays the rest.  The entire process is electronic so your claims are paid quickly.

Keep Your Coverage

Keep Your Coverage

Your plan is guaranteed for life and renews each and every month, as long as you pay the premiums on time and make no material misrepresentations on the application (premiums are subject to change).

What’s more, your Medicare Parts A and B and Medicare supplement benefits aren’t impacted by the annual Medicare open enrollment or the Affordable Care Act annual election period every fall.

Take Your Coverage Coast-to-Coast

Take Your Coverage Coast-to-Coast

Just like Medicare, your Medicare supplement insurance covers your health care needs anywhere in the United States.  That way, you can visit family and friends anywhere you choose.

Some Medicare supplement insurance plans provide limited medically necessary emergency care outside the country.  (Benefit is subject to a $250 deductible, 20 percent coinsurance and a lifetime maximum of $50,000.)

Side by side, Plans F and G include the same benefits, except Plan G doesn’t pay the $183 Medicare Part B deductible, you do.  To compare, add the total annual premium for both plans and add the annual Part B deductible.  If you're willing to pay the Part B deductible yourself, Plan G may be a good option for you.

When's the best time to buy a Medigap policy?

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period.  This period lasts for 6 months and begins on the first day of the month in which you’re both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.  During this period, an insurance company can’t use medical underwriting.  This means the insurance company can’t do any of these because of your health problems:

  • Refuse to sell you any Medigap policy it offers
  • Charge you more for a Medigap policy than they charge someone with no health problems
  • Make you wait for coverage to start

When I turned 65, I had over 50 insurance agents call me about providing Medicare Supplement coverage, to fill in the gaps of my Medicare coverage. Of all the agents, he was the only one that gave me multiple choices that I could look at and make a choice. He never made me feel that I was being pushed into anything and that it was my decision. All the other agents pushed me from the start to purchase a product from them. Chad didn’t do that but answered all my questions so that I made the right decision for me. I recommend him very highly.
