Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
Private insurance companies offer Medicare Part D plans, which add prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare (A & B), and certain Part C (Medicare Advantage) plans. There are two ways of securing Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
You can enroll in a standalone Part D plan or by enrolling in a Part C plan that includes Part D. Even if you don't take any regular medications, unless you have other creditable drug coverage that pays "as good as Medicare" pays, you'll want to enroll in a plan to avoid the Part D late enrollment penalty. Part D plan benefits, formularies (list of the plan's covered drugs), network pharmacies, and drug costs change annually.
Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)
Private insurance companies offer Medicare Advantage plans contracted through Medicare as alternatives to Original Medicare. These plans combine all of the benefits of Medicare Part A (80% Hospital) and Part B (80% Medical), and typically include prescription drug (Part D) coverage. However, some plans do not include drug coverage. All plans have an annual maximum out-of-pocket amount that a member would be responsible for.
You must ensure your hospital and preferred physicians are in the plan's "network" to minimize costs. Plans may also include dental and vision coverage and other benefits not covered by Original Medicare. Many plans have a $0 monthly premium. (You must continue to pay your Part B premium to Medicare.)
Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance plans cover gaps in Original Medicare Part A (80% Hospital) and Part B (80% Medical). Medigap plans help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like the Part A inpatient hospital deductible and Parts A and B 20% coinsurance.
Medigap plans are not the same as Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans and only work with Original Medicare, Parts A and B. Part D prescription drug coverage is not included in any Medigap plan. You must enroll in a standalone Part D plan for prescription coverage and to avoid late enrollment penalties. You can use any hospital or doctor that accepts Medicare. Medigap plans don't have networks.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is October 15th through December 7th. Review and compare your Medicare plan before the deadline!
