What Is a Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plan?
Medicare Advantage is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide your Part A and Part B benefits. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include additional coverage, such as prescription drugs, vision, dental, or hearing, often bundled into a single plan.
Medicare Advantage plans typically use a network of doctors and hospitals, and many have a $0 monthly premium in some areas, though costs, coverage, and networks vary widely by plan and location.
Not all Medicare Advantage plans are available in every area, and plan features vary by carrier, plan, and county. Enrollment in a Medicare Advantage plan depends on contract renewal.
What Medicare Advantage Plans May Include
- All benefits covered under Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
- Often, prescription drug coverage (Part D) included in the plan
- Many plans include extra benefits like dental, vision, or hearing coverage
- An annual out-of-pocket maximum, which Original Medicare alone does not have
Things to Understand Before Choosing
- Most plans use a network of doctors and hospitals, such as an HMO or PPO
- Referrals may be required to see specialists, depending on the plan type
- Plan availability, costs, and benefits can change from year to year
Who this is for
Is a Medicare Advantage Plan Right for You?
Medicare Advantage tends to appeal to people who want more coverage bundled into a single plan, often with lower monthly costs.
- You want an all-in-one plan — Medical, prescription drug, and often extra benefits combined in one plan
- You’re comfortable with a network — Willing to use a defined network of doctors and hospitals in exchange for added benefits
- You want a cap on costs — Medicare Advantage plans include an annual out-of-pocket maximum
- You want extra benefits — Interested in dental, vision, hearing, or other coverage beyond Original Medicare
