The Basics: What Each Part of Medicare Covers
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, and for some younger people with certain disabilities. It’s made up of several parts, each covering something different.
Part A — Hospital Insurance
Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care
Part B — Medical Insurance
Doctor and specialist visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment
Part C — Medicare Advantage
An alternative way to receive Part A and B benefits (and often more) through a private insurance company
Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
Help cover the cost of prescription medications
Where Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Fits In
Medicare Supplement insurance is a separate type of policy, sold by private companies, that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help cover some of the costs Medicare doesn’t, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

- New to Medicare — Recently became eligible due to age or disability and aren’t sure where to begin
