What Is Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Insurance?
Medicare Supplement insurance, often called “Medigap,” is coverage sold by private insurance companies to help pay for some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
In most states, Medigap plans are standardized and identified by letters, A through N. That means a Plan G from one insurance company must offer the same basic benefits as a Plan G from another. In most cases, the primary difference between companies offering the same lettered plan is price, which is exactly where an independent agent can help.
Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin standardize their Medigap plans differently.
What Medigap May Help Cover
- Part A deductible (depending on the plan you choose)
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for extended stays
- Part B coinsurance for covered services
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- Foreign travel emergency care (on many plans)
What Medigap Typically Does Not Cover
- Prescription drugs (a separate Part D plan is usually needed)
- Dental, vision, or hearing care (medically necessary services are covered by Medicare and a Medigap)
- Long-term custodial care at home or at a facility
Plan C and Plan F: The 2020 Change
Starting January 1, 2020, Medicare Supplement plans sold to people newly eligible for Medicare are no longer permitted to cover the Part B deductible. As a result, Plan C and Plan F are not available to those newly eligible on or after that date. If you already had one of these plans, or were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you may still be able to keep or purchase these plans.
Who this is for
Is a Medicare Supplement Plan Right for You?
Medigap tends to be a good fit for people who value predictability and flexibility over the lowest possible monthly premium.
- You want to keep your current doctors — Medicare Parts A and B + Medigap allows you to use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. No networks.
- You travel frequently — Coverage works nationwide, and many plans include foreign travel emergency care
- You prefer predictable costs — Helps you budget for healthcare with fewer surprise bills or limitations
- You don’t want referrals — See specialists directly, without going through a primary care gatekeeper
