Supplemental Plans — Dental, Vision & Hearing
Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage: Help Paying for the Care Original Medicare Leaves Out
Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine dental, vision, or hearing care, and not every Medicare Advantage plan covers it fully either. A standalone dental, vision, and hearing plan helps fill that gap. As an independent agency, we compare plans from multiple carriers to find one that fits your needs and your budget, at no cost to you.

What Does a DVH Plan Cover?
A dental, vision, and hearing plan is supplemental coverage that helps pay for routine and major care in these three areas, care that Original Medicare generally does not cover. Plans can be purchased as a single combined policy or, depending on the carrier, as separate dental, vision, or hearing coverage.
This is general product education. Specific covered services, annual maximums, and waiting periods vary by plan and carrier. This page does not describe the details of any single policy.
What a DVH Plan May Help Cover
- Dental: routine cleanings and exams, X-rays, fillings, and often more extensive care like crowns, dentures, or extractions
- Vision: routine eye exams, and an allowance toward glasses or contact lenses
- Hearing: hearing exams, and an allowance toward hearing aids
Why This Coverage Often Gets Overlooked
- Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally excludes routine dental, vision, and hearing care entirely
- Medigap plans follow Original Medicare’s coverage, so they don’t add DVH benefits either
- Medicare Advantage plans often include some DVH benefits, but the amount of coverage varies widely from plan to plan, and some benefits are modest

Checking What Your Medicare Coverage Actually Includes
Dental, vision, and hearing needs tend to become more frequent later in life, right around the time many people transition onto Medicare, a program that wasn’t built to cover them. Whether that gap matters to you often comes down to which type of Medicare coverage you have.
If you have Original Medicare and Medigap
Neither includes routine dental, vision, or hearing benefits, so a standalone DVH plan fills a gap those two don’t touch at all.
If you’re on Medicare Advantage
Your plan may already include some DVH benefits, but it’s worth checking the specific annual maximum and covered services, since a standalone plan can supplement modest built-in coverage.
If you’re considering Medicare Advantage
Comparing how much DVH coverage different Advantage plans actually include is one factor worth weighing carefully, since the benefit can vary significantly by plan and county.
Dental, vision, and hearing insurance is not a Medicare Advantage plan and is not a substitute for one. Whether a standalone plan makes sense alongside your specific Medicare coverage depends on what your current plan already includes.
Who this is for
Is a DVH Plan Right for You?
- You have Original Medicare with or without Medigap — Since neither covers routine dental, vision, or hearing care
- You’re on Medicare Advantage with limited DVH benefits — A standalone plan can add coverage beyond a modest built-in allowance
- You wear glasses, use hearing aids, or need regular dental work — Routine and ongoing needs in these areas add up quickly out of pocket
- You’re not yet Medicare-eligible — Under-65 individuals and families can also purchase DVH coverage, particularly if their primary health plan doesn’t include it
