Medicare Part D Prescription Plans, Explained Simply — So You Can Choose With Confidence

Original Medicare doesn’t include prescription drug coverage on its own. A Medicare Part D plan helps cover the cost of your medications.

Part D basics

What Is a Medicare Part D Plan?

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Coverage can be purchased as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement plan, or it may already be included in some Medicare Advantage plans.

Each Part D plan has its own list of covered medications, called a formulary, along with its own pricing tiers. Because formularies and costs vary by plan, the right Part D plan often depends on the specific medications you take.

Plan formularies, pricing tiers, and pharmacy networks vary by plan and can change annually. A late enrollment penalty may apply if you don’t enroll in a Part D plan or other creditable prescription coverage when first eligible.

What Affects Your Part D Costs

  • Monthly premium, which varies by plan and carrier
  • Annual deductible, if the plan has one
  • Copayments or coinsurance, which depend on the medication’s pricing tier
  • Whether your pharmacy is in the plan’s preferred network

Why the Right Plan Depends on Your Medications

  • Not every plan covers every medication in the same way
  • A plan with a low premium may cost more overall if your specific medications are priced higher on that plan’s tiers
  • Reviewing your plan each year during Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15th through Dec. 7th) can help you avoid overpaying as formularies change
  • Your Part D plan must mail the “Annual Notice of Change,” no later than September 30th, which outlines any adjustments to costs, coverage, and drug formularies before annual enrollment begins

Who this is for

Who Needs a Part D Plan?

  • You have Original Medicare and Medigap — A standalone Part D plan is generally needed for prescription coverage, since Medigap doesn’t include it
  • You get your Part D through a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan — Costs, coverage, and formularies change annually
  • You’re newly eligible for Medicare — Enrolling in a Part D plan (or other creditable coverage) when first eligible can help you avoid a future late enrollment penalty
  • Your medications have changed — If your prescriptions changed this year, your current plan may no longer be the most cost-effective option
  • You haven’t reviewed your plan recently — Formularies and pricing can change annually, even if you don’t switch plans

Finding the Plan That Fits Your Medications

Because Part D plans differ in which medications they cover and at what cost, comparing your specific prescription list against multiple plans is often the only way to know which plan saves you money.

Chad did a great job explaining the complex MEDICARE options to us in a simple and easy to understand manner. We then were able to choose the options that made the most sense for us and were very cost effective. The fact that Chad does not represent just one carrier allows him to offer the best rates and programs from all of the insurance companies. Super nice guy and great to work with. Very patient and kind with NO high pressure sales tactics. Highly recommend Chad Cason-

My retirement plan changed suddenly and needed to move forward with setting up my Medicare, Plan D and supplemental plans. Chad was recommended to me and I would recommend him to anyone else. He is there to answer questions, even if you're not yet ready to purchase a plan. He is a tremendous resource. When I was ready to purchase, he took care of everything that he could. Mostly, I just had to sign my name.
