Hospital Indemnity Insurance: Extra Protection for an Unexpected Hospital Stay
A hospital stay can bring costs your primary coverage doesn’t fully absorb. A hospital indemnity plan pays cash benefits directly to you when you’re hospitalized, to help cover the gap. As an independent agency, we compare plans from multiple carriers to find one that fits your situation, at no cost to you.

What Is a Hospital Indemnity Plan?
Hospital indemnity insurance is a supplemental policy that pays a fixed cash benefit directly to you when you’re admitted to a hospital, separate from and in addition to your primary medical coverage. Unlike your main health plan, this cash benefit isn’t paid to the hospital. It’s paid to you, to use however you need, whether that’s a copay, transportation, groceries, or a bill that has nothing to do with your health plan at all.
This is general product education. Specific benefit amounts, waiting periods, and covered events vary by plan and carrier. This page does not describe the details of any single policy.
What a Hospital Indemnity Plan May Help With
- A fixed cash benefit paid per day, or per hospital admission, depending on the plan
- Costs that come with a hospital stay beyond your medical bills, such as travel, lodging for family, or household expenses
- Copayments and deductibles under your primary plan
- Some plans also offer benefits for related events, such as an ICU stay or outpatient surgery
If you’re on (or considering) Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage and Hospital Costs: What to Know
Medicare Advantage plans offer valuable benefits, often including an annual out-of-pocket maximum. But many plans use daily copayments for inpatient hospital stays, meaning the longer the stay, the more you may owe before you reach that maximum.
A hospital indemnity plan is designed to work alongside a Medicare Advantage plan, not replace it. It doesn’t change your Medicare Advantage coverage. It simply adds a cash benefit on top, to help offset those hospital-related costs while your Medicare Advantage plan handles the medical bills themselves.
If you’re already enrolled in Medicare Advantage
A hospital indemnity plan can help soften the impact of per-day copays during an inpatient stay.
If you’re considering Medicare Advantage
Pairing it with a hospital indemnity plan from the start is a common way to add a layer of financial protection while still benefiting from Medicare Advantage’s extra benefits and often lower premiums, and many $0 premium plans, depending on where you live.
If you have Original Medicare and Medigap instead
Hospital indemnity can still provide an added cash cushion, though adding a plan may not be necessary.
Hospital indemnity insurance is not a Medicare Advantage plan and is not a substitute for one. It does not replace or coordinate benefits with Medicare in the way Medigap does. Whether it makes sense alongside your specific Medicare Advantage plan depends on that plan’s own cost-sharing structure.
Who this is for
